It can cause an increase in blood pressure, heart rate, flow of blood to the heart, and a narrowing of the arteries because of its role as a vasoconstrictor. Nicotine potentially contributes to the hardening of the arterial walls, which has been known to lead to heart attacks.
The newer e-cigarette products are known to be far more potent in their delivery of both THC and nicotine into the bloodstream. THC’s short term effects activate parts of the brain that causes an altered sense of time, changes in mood, impaired body movement, and impaired memory. When chronic use of Marijuana begins at a young age, it affects brain development. It may impair thinking, memory, and learning functions.
A study done by Duke showed it can lead to a decrease in IQ by 8 points when smoking begins in teenage years. While another study of twins showed a decrease in IQ of 4 points when comparing the twin who had smoked since teenage years to the other who had not.
